Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It uses a firm but gentle pressue to improve circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Myofascial Release involves a gentle stretch and light pressure. The therapist's hands tend to follow the unwinding of the restricted fascia (an interweaving "web" of connective tissue that is continuous throughout the entire body), while holding the stretch until the fascia is completely unwound.
Hot stones are a tool used to enhance the relaxing effects of massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones (usually basalt stones) are placed on key points on the body. The massage therapist holds the stones and uses them to massage certain areas holding tension (usually the back, arms and legs).
