Massage Therapy Services
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It uses a firm but gentle pressue to improve circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation. Swedish massage has many known benefits, such as increasing circulation, loosening joints and improving range of motion, relieving cramps and muscle spasms, decreasing muscle fatigue, and acting as a sedative of the nervous system, which is the reason for the deep sense of relaxation felt afterward.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. Often times during a deep tissue session the client will feel a varying degree of discomfort. This discomfort should never be intolerable, and an open line of communication between client and therapist is invaluable. Beneficial results of this modality are usually felt about 24 hours after the treatment. There may be slight soreness (similar to the soreness felt after an intense work out) for 24-48 hours after a deep tissue session. Any concerns before, during, or after your treatment should be addressed with your therapist, no matter how insignificant you may feel they are!
Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release involves a gentle stretch and light pressure. The therapist's hands tend to follow the unwinding of the restricted fascia (an interweaving "web" of connective tissue that is continuous throughout the entire body), while holding the stretch until the fascia is completely unwound. The gentle traction applied to the restricted fascia will result in heat and increased blood flow in the area. The client may feel small vibrating sensations, heat, or tingling, or nothing at all. The pace of myofascial release is very slow, allowing for an opportunity of deep relaxation. The intention of myofascial release work is to allow the body's inherent ability for self correction to return, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body. Myofascial Release is often slow and gentle work, suitable for almost anyone able to recieve massage. I find it most beneficial in releasing muscle knots and areas of tension and soreness.
Hot Stone Treatment
Hot stones are a tool used to enhance the relaxing effects of massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones (usually basalt stones) are placed on key points on the body. The massage therapist holds the stones and uses them to massage certain areas holding tension (usually the back, arms and legs).
The use of hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times. The heat warms and relaxes the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure without fighting as much resistance from tense muscles. The warmth of the hot stones facilitates muscle relaxation, as well as improves circulation and calms the nervous system.
