User experience design
The discipline of user experience design involves the application of design principles to interactive interfaces, especially on the web. Three key components are interaction design, information design and graphic design.
Interaction design
Interaction design concerns the creation of interfaces for user interaction. Examples include the design of navigation systems, interactive forms, publishing interfaces for blogs, and even the touch-screen interface of Apple’s iPhone.
Information design
Information design concerns the way information is laid out and presented, in order to aid understanding. This could include how a product catalogue is presented, the layout of a friend’s status updates on a social network, or the graphical representations used to explain statistics on a financial website.
Graphic design
Visual or graphic design concerns how the website looks—its surface. It includes considerations of layout, branding, contrast, colour, and typography.
